I
INTRODUCTION
-
Reason
for Choosing the Title
In this
globalization era, the progress of technology in communication and
transportation has brought a great revolution in the field of
information. It has a huge effect in looking for the information,
which deals with political, social, cultural and economic condition
of other countries. It shows us the importance of international
trading activities and relationship for economic progress.
Actually, there is
no single country that can stand by it self. All countries need one
to another to develop the condition in all aspects, so they braid
international relationship. In terms of import matters, every country
should understand the regulation and the system as well. Otherwise
the activities of import will not run well.
Import is one of the
ways of getting the goods from another country. In process of
production a company need materials that have good quality. Actually,
not all of the materials are needed available in the country. The
company tries to get it from another country. Import becomes one of
the ways to get it.
Textile
is one of the commodities that has a great prospect in the
international market. As developing Textile Company, PT. Batam
Textile Industry Ungaran always increases the quality by importing
the products from another country. In importing the products this
company has a certain procedure. Based on the reason above, the
writer chooses “ The
Procedure of Import at PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran”
as the title of the paper.

In line with the
reason for choosing the title, the statements of the problems are as
the following:

Limitation
of the Problem
The problem is
limited into the procedure of import at PT. Batam Textile Industry
Ungaran and the kinds of documents used in performing the procedure
of import during the implementation of the field study.

Referring to the
statement of problem, the objectives of the study are as follows:

The significance of

used as a reference at library for the students who want to know
about procedure of import that is carried out at a company.

For the company
This paper can be
used as an input, which deals with the improvement of import
department of PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran.

Implementation
of the Study
The
study was conducted for twenty-five days (from February 2nd
to February 28th

Method
of Data Collection
In writing this
paper the writer used several data, while the methods which are used
in collecting the data are as follows:
-
Observation
According
to Kartono (1996:157) observation is “study
yang disengaja dan sistematis tentang fenomena sosial dan
gejala-gejala alam dengan jalan pengamatan dan pencatatan”
(Observing is an intentional and systematic study about social and
natural phenomena by observing and recording). By using this method,
the writer observed the administration and import department of PT.
Batam Textile Industry Ungaran about the procedure of import at the
company.

Interview
According to Nasir
(1983 : 235) “interview is process interaction between interviewer
and respondent”. By using this method the writer interviewed
administration and import department officers who handle the import
matters and the manager of PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran.
-
Library research
According
to Arikunto (1996 : 186) “library research is mencari
data mengenai hal-hal atau variable yang berupa catatan, transkrip,
buku-buku, surat kabar, majalah, dan lain-lain”.(A
process of data collection on things or variable in forms of
transcripts, books, newspaper, magazine, etc). By using this method
the writer read and studied literature materials related to the
problem.

Organization
The organization of
this paper are as following:
Chapter I is
Introduction. This chapter consists of the reason for choosing the
title, the statement of the problem, limitation of the problem, the
objective of the study, the method of data collection, and the paper
organization.
Chapter II is
Literature Review. This chapter consists of definitions of procedure,
definitions of import, definition of documents, the procedure of
import in Indonesia and kind of import documents.
Chapter III is The
Procedure of Import at PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran. This
chapter consists of the story of PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran,
organizational structure, the job description of PT. Batam Textile
Industry Ungaran, the procedure of import at PT. Batam Textile
Industry Ungaran, and the import documents used of PT. Batam Textile
Industry Ungaran.
Chapter IV is
Conclusion and Suggestion.

ABSTRACT
This paper, entitled “The Procedure of Import at PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran”, is the result of field study conducted for two weeks (February 2nd to February 28th, 2006) at PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran. This study is aimed at describing the procedure of import at PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran.
The data of this study were collected by using interview, observation and library research. The interview method was conducted to get information about import in the company. The observation method was aimed at understanding the activities of the imported the goods. The library research method was conducted to get references related to the problem.
From the data analysis, it can be concluded that the procedure of import at PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran consists of 13 steps: (1) purchasing manager makes an inquiry to the exporter, (2) the exporter issues sales contract, then he/she sends it to the purchasing manager as importer, (3) the purchasing manager informs the import manager to open L/C, (4) import manager asks foreign exchange bank to open L/C in the name of exporter, (5) the correspondence bank sends L/C to foreign exchange bank, (6) the foreign exchange bank sends L/C to the exporter, (7) the exporter sends copy of packing list, commercial invoice and CoO to the import manager, (8) the exporter prepares and transfers the goods by shipping agent, (9) the shipping agent submits the goods as the exchange of B/L and D/O, (10) the import manager registers PIB and import document to the shipping agent, (11) import manager by consignee asks an agreement of loading the goods to the customs, (12) the consignee gets D/O, if all of administrations are completed, (13) after all of administrations are completed, PT Batam Textile Industry Ungaran receives the goods from shipping agent.
Import documents, which are used by PT. Batam Textile Industry Ungaran are: Commercial Invoice, PIB, Packing List, Bill of Lading (B/L), Certificate of Origin (CoO), Requisition of Opening Import L/C and Delivery Order (D/O).
